Ontario, Calif. (March 19, 2012) – Spectre Performance regrets to inform its fans and customers that the 2012 Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge hill climb road race in Virginia City, Nevada, has been cancelled due to unforeseen business circumstances, and will return in June 2013. Racers already registered for the event will receive a full refund of entry fees.

“We are disappointed that we have to call off the race for 2012,” said Spectre Performance president Amir Rosenbaum, “but unforeseen business circumstances over the past few months meant we had to choose between cancelling the race or holding it with reduced staff, which compromises safety – and that wasn’t really a choice at all. We want to thank the racers and the residents of Virginia City and Silver City who have been so supportive over the past three years. We have committed to making the Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge as fun, exciting and safe as possible – so this year we have to put things on hold, but we’ll be back next year and it will be better than ever.”

While the June 15-17 event will no longer proceed as planned, plans for the 2013 event are underway, and Spectre Performance looks forward to its return to the hill at that time. Race organizers will contact those that have already entered the event. An announcement regarding the 2013 race will be made before the end of the year.

Hwy 341 in Virginia City, Nevada is one of the most technical and thrilling mountain roads in the United States. The 2011 event resulted in over 391 runs up the very fast and twisty mountain road – 5.2 miles at a time and 2012 promises even more exotic cars and new activities. The race, set for June 15 – 17, 2012, will pit supercars, muscle cars and imports against the clock in a full-bore blast up the mountain road, which will be closed to the public for the event.

The Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge is a rare opportunity to drive flat-out on one of the most technical and aggressive stretch of mountain road in the country, without the worry of oncoming traffic or law enforcement. The paved course is 5.2 miles long with 22+ turns, a 1,216-foot rise in elevation, steep drop offs and no guardrails! Vehicles must be street-legal and registered. Tires must be DOT legal. Event highlights will include a track talk, warm up laps, class qualifying, a car show and parade through the iconic old-west style mining town, two days of racing and a banquet for all participants. The road will be closed for racing in coordination with local agencies, and once again competitors will have a chance to be inducted into the exclusive “3:41 Club” if they can crack the three-minute, forty-one second barrier.

The original Virginia City Hill Climb was founded in 1972 and run through 2002. Rosenbaum holds the all time record for the event, running the course in three minutes, ten seconds in a Ferrari F40. Five new members were inducted into the 3:41 Club in 2011.

Ontario, Calif. (June 30, 2011) – It’s a race that defies logic – an old Nevada mining town straight out of a Sergio Leone Western flick, a wild cast of characters, German supercars, Italian exotics, home-brewed racers, vintage muscle cars and even a few helicopter cameraships – all racing up a 5.2 mile mountain road with 500-foot drop-offs and no guard rails. The 2011 Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge hill climb, held in Virginia City, Nevada (aka the Nürburgring of Nevada) is in the record books, logging 48 drivers, 391 runs and five new members of the exclusive Spectre 3:41 Club. It was a wild success.

Lou Gigliotti of Wylie, Texas, came to the hill with a title to defend and like any good gunslinger, he fired first and drove his LG Motorsports 2010 ZR1 to the overall event win, pushing the supercar to a best lap time of 3:14, 7.3 seconds faster than his race-winning run last year! Local driver Duck Fuson drove his radical 2,300 pound 911 Turbo to a 3:15.2, right on Gigliotti’s heels. The final spot on the podium went to Jeff Rosen in a 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, who ran 3:22.2. Local hero Jeremy Kappus drove to a fourth place finish with a 3:24.2 run in his daily driver Lancer Evo IX.

Other notable entries include RJ Gottlieb, driving his world-famous “Big Red” 1969 Camaro race car that won the Silver State Challenge to a 3:29.99 run up the hill while being chased by a helicopter. Dan Weishaar, who drove his 1968 Plymouth Road Runner from Yuma Arizona, to Virginia City, made over a dozen runs up the hill and then drove home. On the opposite end of the scale (literally), Thomas Berndt, who was a corner worker in 2010, came back for the 2nd running of the race with his home-built Toyota MR2 and outran quite a few of the big-bore sports cars. Competitor Justin Schuh ran a 3:31.80 in a brand new 2012 Nissan GT-R, making him the fastest competitor on the hill in an unmodified vehicle, and amazingly, Kevin Wesley was not far behind, squeezing a 3:39.9 second run out of a totally stock 2011 Dodge Challenger 392 automatic. Battle of the Titans!

“We made 391 runs up a very fast and twisty mountain road – 5.2 miles at a time – with no guardrails and steep drop offs,” said Spectre Performance President and current 341 record holder Amir Rosenbaum. “That’s over 2,000 miles at a very high rate of speed. That’s almost coast to coast on a narrow twisty road at high speed! With only one minor crunchlet and four minor breakdowns out of almost 400 runs, the 2011 Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge was truly epic. We proved that you can get a large group of drivers to be very focused and very careful and very safe and very very FAST. Next year will be even faster.”

SPEED BY SPECTRE HIGHWAY 341 CHALLENGE
OFFICIAL RULES – 2012


The Spectre 341 Challenge is designed to be a challenging test of vehicles and drivers. Due to the nature of the event and technical difficulty of the course, it is a dangerous event that could result in injury or death. Although not required, the race directors and organizers strongly encourage each competitor to utilize properly installed roll cages, 4 or 5 point harnesses, fire retardant racing suits, on-board fire protection and other prudent safety equipment.
 

  1. Qualifying vehicles must be four-wheeled government licensed, registered and insured street vehicles. No purpose built racecars will be allowed to compete.
  2. All drivers and passengers must sign a liability waiver. Passengers must be at least 18 years of age, identified and registered before the competition begins and only one passenger may be in the vehicle during the event.
  3. During the event, passengers will not be allowed in any open top or convertible vehicle under any circumstances while in competition.
  4. A mandatory driver/passenger meeting will be held prior to the first competition.
  5. Only official wrist banded drivers and passengers may ride in the cars on the course.
  6. All competitors must have a current valid driver’s license
  7. Participating cars must pass a technical inspection that will emphasize safety. Safety features such as racing specific harnesses roll cages/bars, fire systems, etc, are acceptable and strongly recommended. All of the following will be required:
    • Functional headlights
    • Functional taillights
    • Functional brake lights
    • Functional turn signals
    • Safety-glass or Lexan windshield
  8. On board fire extinguisher – A 2.5 lb. minimum, automotive BC fire extinguisher, with a secure quick-release mounting bracket made of metal. The mounting bracket must be securely mounted to the vehicle or cage, zip ties will not be allowed. The extinguisher must be within easy reach of the driver.
  9. Helmet use is required during all segments of the competition. Helmet must be approved automotive style with a Snell foundation sticker of SA 2005 or later. Motorcycle helmets will not be approved.
  10. All convertibles or roadsters must have rollover protection.
  11. Non-synthetic clothing (cotton, wool, leather, etc.) covering the torso, arms and legs shall be required (no shorts or short sleeves). The use of racing fire protection gear is highly recommended.
  12. TIRES – Participants must use DOT approved street/track tires with a manufacture date within the last 24 months. (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11) Tire shaving is allowed with an appropriate receipt from a professional service provider. Tires will be required to pass a technical inspection before the event. Tire safety is of the utmost importance and the race director or event coordinators reserve the right to disqualify any competitor with questionable tires.
  13. Each entrant will be issued a decal package that will include car numbers that must be clearly visible on both doors.
  14. If a participant receives a moving violation (speeding ticket) on Highway 341 and/or 342 within 30 days prior to the event or during the competition, and the event officials are properly notified, the participant will be immediately disqualified and no longer allowed to participate in the competition.
  15. Any participant or participant’s vehicle, which does a burn-out or any other reckless conduct in or around the Virginia City or Silver City areas at any time before or during the event will be disqualified.
  16. Timing is done via an on-course GPS system and is the only “official” system.
  17. Race director and event management staff will have COMPLETE discretion to deny or remove from competition anyone in the event for any reason.
  18. Rules interpretation will be at the sole discretion of the 341 Challenge committee and/or event organizers. Rules may be changed or amended as necessary at organizers discretion.
